A few years ago, I started learning Sanskrit. I wanted to learn the language so that one day I could read the Hindu scriptures in their original language. It was my dream for many reasons, but mostly because it seemed like an impossible task, like learning Hebrew or Arabic—I knew that this would take me at least a few years. But recently, my professor announced that we would be looking at The Bhagavad Gita in class and there's no way I could understand it if it wasn't translated into English first. So together with two of my classmates, we decided to learn Hindi through Paheli720pindualaudiohindi (one hour per chapter, 38 chapters). I have been able to understand a lot of it, but mostly because I have been attempting to do this for a year. The first few weeks were difficult, but I persisted and eventually found a routine that helps me focus on the time spent reading the chapter. Why did we choose Paheli? Because we were not ready to accept that we would not be able to read the Gita in Sanskrit or Hindi. In fact, we wanted to prove that it was possible. We consulted with many teachers and many said that they could read the Gita in Sanskrit or Hindi within one year - something that seemed impossible for us! So, we went with Paheli. We made the decision to learn the Bhagavad Gita in Paheli because it is easy to read, yet still has deep meanings. The language of Paheli is simple, yet not easy to understand. It was also spoken by many great Indians including Mahatma Gandhi. We also decided that we weren't going to take forever trying to read the whole thing - one hour per chapter, 38 chapters (28 pages), seemed like a reasonable number of chapters/hours to read in one year. We have three goals for the year: 1) to finish reading Paheli720pindualaudiohindi, 2) to teach Surya Namaskara to at least 10 children, and 3) to learn at least five Sanskrit slokas by heart. 1. Paheli720pindualaudiohindi seems like a reasonable challenge, because it is a language that is easy to understand yet has deep meanings because of its poetic nature. 2. It will help us share our experiences in learning the Bhagavad Gita with others who are following along with us. 3. The main reason for the last two goals is to help us remember the Paheli phonetics. For any other Sanskrit language, it would be very hard to learn phonetics without an alphabet or using a dictionary - however, Paheli has only 28 letters. We don't have to memorize lots of letters, but we need to listen and practice pronouncing each letter 3 times daily, at minimum. We are currently in the middle of chapter 57 which contains Chapter 10 of Bhagavad Gita. Our goal is to finish reading Paheli720pindualaudiohindi by May 1st, 2014. cfa1e77820
